Turn ChatGPT into a coach that knows your real meals, workouts and weight

By the Cal Plus team · Published September 12, 2026

Cal Plus connects to ChatGPT so it can read your own logged meals, workouts, weight, steps, habits and sleep and coach you on them. As of September 2026 it is the only calorie tracker we know of that gives an assistant read-only access to your whole record, instead of asking you to type your meals into the chat or answering from generic targets.

You keep logging the easy way, by photo, barcode or menu scan in the app. Your assistant gets a read-only window on the result. Ask it anything a good coach would look at your diary to answer.

What it feels like

An example, with made-up numbers, and below it the 33-second demo from the app. You ask in ChatGPT:

You

Why has my weight stopped changing? Look at my last 8 weeks.

Your assistant, reading your Cal Plus data

Your weigh-ins have been flat at 78 to 79 kg since mid-July. On the days you logged, calories averaged 2,340 against your 2,000 target, and the overshoot is concentrated on Fridays and Saturdays, mostly evening meals. Protein is fine at 150 g. Training is consistent at three sessions a week, and your squat is up 10 kg. One change: bring the two weekend dinners in line with your weekday average and the deficit comes back without touching anything else.

Every number in that answer comes from what you actually logged. No copying, no pasting, no "roughly".

What you can ask

How it works

ChatGPT can plug into outside apps through a standard called MCP, the Model Context Protocol. Cal Plus runs its own MCP server at mcp.calplus.app. When you connect, you sign in with your Cal Plus email and a 6-digit code, then tick the data categories you are willing to share. From then on, when you ask a question that needs your data, the assistant asks Cal Plus for exactly that piece and gets it back read-only.

What the assistant can see, if you tick it

How this compares with other apps

Three different things get called "ChatGPT integration". They are not the same.

Checked on September 12, 2026 against each product's own website or announcement. MyFitnessPal said meal logging in ChatGPT was planned for a future version.

The difference matters for accuracy. Coaching is only as good as the numbers under it, and numbers from a barcode, a photo scan reviewed by you, or a workout logged set by set beat numbers you reconstruct from memory in a chat window. Cal Plus keeps the app for the logging and gives the assistant the record.

Set it up in two minutes

  1. ChatGPT: open Settings, then Apps, and search for Cal Plus, or type @Cal Plus in a chat.
  2. Press Connect. A Cal Plus page opens: enter your Cal Plus email and the 6-digit code we send you.
  3. Tick the categories you want to share and press Connect. Then ask your first question.

What it costs

The connection is part of the Cal Plus ad-free plan: $14.99 a year or $34.99 once on calplus.app, a little more inside the app. ChatGPT keeps connected apps on its paid tiers, so you also need a paid ChatGPT plan. Everything else in Cal Plus, including its own in-app AI coach, stays free for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cal Plus the only calorie tracker that connects to ChatGPT?

As of September 2026 it is the only one we know of that gives ChatGPT read-only access to your whole logged record: meals, workouts, weight, steps, sleep, habits and goals. MyFitnessPal's ChatGPT app serves recipes and calorie targets rather than reading your diary, and chat-native trackers ask you to log by typing into the chat instead of using an app.

Can ChatGPT change my Cal Plus data?

No. The connection is read-only by design. A connected assistant can never log a meal, change a goal or delete anything, and it only sees the categories you ticked when you connected. Remove the connection in the assistant's settings and access stops immediately.

What does the ChatGPT connection cost?

It is part of the Cal Plus ad-free plan: $14.99 a year or $34.99 once on calplus.app, a little more inside the app. You also need a paid ChatGPT plan, because ChatGPT keeps connected apps on its paid tiers. Cal Plus's own in-app AI coach stays free for everyone.

What can the assistant see?

Only the categories you tick on the consent screen: your profile and goals, food logs with calories and nutrients, steps and active energy, sleep, workouts with sets, reps and weights, weight history, habits and water, and your saved dietary preferences. It reads them only when a question needs them.

Do I still need the Cal Plus app if ChatGPT can read my data?

Yes. The app does the logging: photo, barcode and menu scans, the gym log, groups and the health-app sync. The assistant reads the result. That split is what makes the coaching accurate: the numbers come from scans and a food database, not from what you remember typing into a chat.

How do I connect Cal Plus to ChatGPT?

In ChatGPT open Settings, Apps, and search for Cal Plus, or type @Cal Plus in a chat. Press Connect, enter your Cal Plus email and the 6-digit code we send, tick the categories you want to share, and you are done.
