The Best Free AI Calorie Tracker in 2026, Honestly Compared
Cal Plus is the best free AI calorie tracker for most people in 2026: unlimited AI photo, barcode and menu scans, a free unlimited AI coach and a full gym workout log in one app, paid for by occasional short ads instead of a feature paywall. Below we put it side by side with CalFix, Cal AI and MyFitnessPal Premium on what is actually free, what each one charges, and where a rival is the better pick.
Transparency first: we make Cal Plus. Every claim about a rival below comes from its own App Store listing or website, checked on September 12, 2026, and linked in the sources at the end.
The short answer
- Best free AI calorie tracker overall: Cal Plus. Unlimited scans, free coach, full gym log, groups with friends, nothing to set up.
- Best if you want the biggest verified food database and will pay: MyFitnessPal Premium, about $79.99 a year in the US.
- Best if you already pay for Cal AI and like it: keep Cal AI. There is no free version after its 3-day trial.
- CalFix: free scanning, but its listing sells Premium tiers and recent reviews mention an ad every time you log food. A backup option.
How we judged "best free"
"Free to download" is not the same as free to use. We scored each app on six things a free tracker has to deliver:
- Unlimited AI photo scans without paying. Daily caps and short trials do not count.
- Barcode scanning free. Label data beats AI guessing for packaged food, so it has to be free too.
- An AI coach you can actually use for free, not a locked tab.
- Workouts logged in the same app, with sets, reps and weight, so calories in and out live together.
- Somewhere to do it with other people. Groups or friends inside the app, because accountability is what keeps a food diary alive past week two.
- Nothing to set up. No accounts on other services, no watching an ad to unlock a scan.
Cal Plus is the only app of the four that ticks all six. The table shows why.

Cal Plus: what is free, what costs money (disclosure: our app)
Free, with no subscription: unlimited AI photo scans, barcode scans and restaurant menu scans, an additive scanner for E-numbers, a recipe finder from a photo of your fridge, an AI coach with memory of your goals, a daily game plan, daily and weekly insights, groups with friends, and a full gym log with 800+ exercises, sets, reps, weight, a rest timer, AI-generated routines and multi-day plans, and groups where you and your friends share meals, react and keep a group streak going, private or public. It reads steps, burned calories and workouts from Apple Health or Health Connect and exports your data as CSV.
Costs money, all optional: going ad-free ($14.99 a year or $34.99 once on calplus.app, $19.99 a year or $39.99 once inside the app), which also unlocks the read-only connection to ChatGPT so your own assistant can coach you on your logged data; call credits for voice calls with the coach; and a $0.99 streak restore.
Where it falls short: you see ads unless you pay; there is no web version; there is no importer for MyFitnessPal history yet; and photo portion estimates carry the same 15 to 30 percent error that research finds in every app, so review a scan before saving and use barcodes for packaged food.
CalFix
CalFix says AI photo scanning and barcode scanning are free with no daily limit, and bundles 7-day meal plans. The catches sit in its App Store listing: Premium at $4.99 a week, $7.99 a month or $29.99 a year to remove ads, and recent reviews describing an ad every time you log food. The listing names a "nutrition assistant" rather than a chat coach, and exercise entry is a calorie offset rather than a gym log with sets and reps. Rated 4.6 from 321 App Store ratings. If you can live with the ad load, it is a workable backup for free scanning; it does not match Cal Plus on the coach or the workout side, and no groups or friends feature is listed anywhere, so it is a solo diary.
Cal AI
Cal AI made photo calorie counting mainstream and is rated 4.8 from 363,000 App Store ratings. But there is no free version: photo and barcode scanning need a subscription after a 3-day trial, sold as "Unlimited" plans from $2.99 (weekly) to $29.99 (yearly) at the time of writing, and third-party price trackers report the amount varies by region and device. Workout logging is basic, there is no chat coach of the Cal Plus kind, and no groups or friends feature is listed. If you are already paying and happy, it is polished and well supported. If your reason for searching was "free", it is not the answer. Our full Cal AI alternatives guide covers more options.
MyFitnessPal Premium
MyFitnessPal has the biggest verified food database and the most integrations, on iOS, Android and the web. Since October 2022 barcode scanning is Premium-only, and so is "meal scan" photo logging: $19.99 a month or $79.99 a year in the US at the time of writing (£64.99 a year in the UK on MyFitnessPal's own pricing page). The free tier still lets you search foods, log exercise and read basic insights, with ads, and there is no AI coach. Its community is a real strength: a friends feed, groups and forums, all free. The right choice if database depth matters more to you than free scanning. We cover what happened to the free version separately.
What "free" means in each app
- Ad-supported (Cal Plus, CalFix): every feature is free and ads pay for it. An optional purchase removes the ads.
- Trial to paid (Cal AI): free for three days, then paid or nothing.
- Freemium (MyFitnessPal): manual logging is free, scanning is paid.
